Atlas Orion 2x Anamorphic Lenses
The Atlas Orion anamorphic prime lenses combine a vintage 2x anamorphic look with modern convenience. The pleasing oval bokeh and classic blue streak flares evoke timeless cinematic masterpieces, while objects in the focus plane remain crisp, and unpleasant distortions are held to a minimum.
Atlas was one of the first to bring “affordable” anamorphic lenses into the modern era. Unlike many competitors, the Atlas Orion series forgoes syncro focusing methods for a variable diopter method. The advantage is a uniform squeeze factor at all focus settings (no “anamorphic mumps”), and pleasant pulls with modest, organic focus breathing in both the horizontal and vertical directions. The lenses also offer an impressive close focusing distance, impossible with many other anamorphic lens focusing designs.
The Atlas Orion lenses have modest barrel distortion on the wider lengths, which is typical among anamorphic lenses. It is most pronounced on the 21mm and becomes almost unnoticeable by 50mm. Their impressive T2.0 speed makes them quite versatile, making them much more practical in low light than most vintage anamorphic options. While T2.0 provides a softer look with an almost dreamy quality, the lenses sharpen up considerably by T2.8.
Like most anamorphic lenses, the Atlas Orions are incompatible with macro tubes/extensions, and instead require diopters for focusing closer than their minimum focus range. The irises are a 14-blade design, providing smooth bokeh at all T stops.
The Orions have focus markings on both sides that allow them to be read by the operator or focus puller. They cover a 31mm image circle, making them a perfect pairing with modern super 35 cameras like the Arri Alexa 35 or even 35mm film. When paired with Atlas’ 1.4x or 1.6x expander, they can cover full frame cameras like the Arri Alexa Mini LF. While we advise using PL mount where possible, the lenses can also be rented in an EF mount configuration.
Hollywood has taken notice of the Atlas Orion lenses, using them on the award-winning films Babylon and Don’t Look Up.
We also rent Atlas Orion Anamorphic Silver Edition Lenses.
