Canon 50mm f/0.95 Dream Lens
The Canon 50mm f/0.95 (T1.1) “Dream” lens is a coveted vintage prime lens. When Canon introduced it as a Rangefinder (RF) lens in 1961, it was the fastest full frame lens manufactured. It was given its nickname by British photojournalists, who were delighted to finally be able to shoot in a variety of low-light and available light situations. At f/0.95, it’s among the fastest vintage optics available today. Our version of this lens was rehoused by TLS, with standard cine gears and an LPL mount, for use on large format cinema cameras like the Arri Alexa Mini LF.
The Canon dream lens has a very narrow depth of field wide open, making impressionistic images that are often defined by their bokeh. Center sharpness wide open is adequate for UHD, but requires precision. The corners sharpen considerably by T2.4. Contrast is reduced wide open and becomes much more controlled by T2. Chromatic aberrations are somewhat controlled by the multiple rare-earth glass elements. Bokeh is circular in the center, becoming cat-eye shaped in the corners on full frame sensors. Out of focus points of light have a classic “soap-bubble” look that’s common among vintage optics. The lens is a double-gauss design, with seven elements arranged in five groups.
